| Legend of Sirena 8" high Edition: 12 Price: contact artist bronze |
The island of Guam's legendary mermaid, Sirena, lived in the town of Agana during Spanish times. Agana is divided by the Minondo River, where fresh spring waters meet the Pacific Ocean. As a beautiful young girl, Sirena loved the water. She was known to swim whenever she could steal a moment from her chores to satisfy her greatest pleasure. One fateful day, Sirena's mother sent her to get coconut shells to be used as coal for the iron. Oblivious to time and duty, Sirena couldn't resist the refreshing river. There she swam while her mother called impatiently. Her mother became so angry that she cursed Sirena with the words: "Sirena should become a fish since she loves the water so!" Sirena's godmother overheard the damning words. She knew the danger of such a curse and cried out "Leave the part that belongs to me!" As she swam, Sirena underwent a great transformation. From the waist below, she became a fish. She would never be able to leave the water again. Her mother, regretful of her curse, could not undo the outcome of fate. Bidding her loved ones farewell, Sirena swam out into the Pacific Ocean. Since her disappearance, seafarers have reported seeing her in different parts of the world. On calm ocean nights, her beautiful sad voice can be heard in song across the waves. According to legend, she can be captured only with a net of human hair. |
